UDI Under EU MDR: What It Is and Why Traceability Matters

Every medical device placed on the EU market now carries a code designed to answer a simple question at any point in its life: exactly which item is this, and where has it been? That code is the Unique Device Identification (UDI), one of the structural pillars of the EU Medical Device Regulation (MDR) 2017/745. For distributors, clinics and procurement teams, understanding what a UDI actually encodes — and why it exists — turns a string of characters on a label into a genuinely useful verification tool.

What a UDI Actually Is

A UDI is not a single number; it is made up of two distinct parts that serve different purposes:

  • UDI-DI (Device Identifier) — a fixed code specific to a manufacturer and a given model or version of a device. It functions like a product's identity card and does not change between units.
  • UDI-PI (Production Identifier) — variable information tied to the specific unit or batch, typically including the lot or batch number, serial number, manufacturing date and expiry date.

Together, the DI answers "what is this product?" and the PI answers "which specific unit or batch is this?" Both are usually printed on the label in both human-readable text and a machine-readable format such as a barcode or data matrix, issued through an accredited issuing agency (for example GS1 or HIBC).

Where UDI Data Lives: EUDAMED

The UDI is designed to feed into EUDAMED, the EU's central database for medical devices. Once fully operational, EUDAMED links each UDI-DI to a device's registered manufacturer, authorized representative, conformity documentation and, where relevant, safety notices. In principle, this allows a regulator, distributor or clinic to look up a device identifier and see verifiable information about its regulatory status — rather than relying solely on the paperwork that accompanies a shipment.

Why Traceability Is More Than a Compliance Formality

For a distributor or institutional buyer, UDI-based traceability supports several practical needs at once:

When reviewing incoming stock or a supplier's documentation, it is worth checking that:

  1. The UDI-DI on the label matches the UDI-DI associated with the device's registered technical documentation.
  2. The UDI-PI's lot number and expiry date are legible and match the accompanying certificate or packing list.
  3. The barcode or data matrix scans cleanly — a UDI that cannot be scanned defeats its own purpose in a warehouse or clinic workflow.

These are quick checks, but they are also the first line of defense against mislabeled, expired or diverted stock entering a facility unnoticed.
